Volunteering with the John Bunyan lets you learn new skills, make new friends, meet new people – and enjoy being out and about on the river. Each cruise has its own crew of five or six people, so you are constantly mixing with other crew and customers. We also get together for training and socials.
The key crew roles are Cabin Crew, Deck Crew, Purser, Helm and Boatmaster. Full training is given. It’s good physical exercise – you’re on your feet for 4-6 hours in a session … enjoying the work, the company and the wildlife on the river!
The John Bunyan takes as much time to get ready – training, maintenance, marketing, bookings, cleaning, catering, promotion, finance, schedule etc – as it does to sail. Last year, we took 6,000 passengers on board, which took us 4500 hours of boat crew time … and 4500 hours of land crew time. So we’re keen to recruit volunteers who can offer to help both afloat and ashore.
The John Bunyan operates April to October each season with daytime, evening, weekday and weekend cruises. We have vacancies for all crew roles, so if you like the sound of what we do, and can offer 2-4 sessions a month regularly throughout the season, including some evening and weekend sessions, we’d love to hear from you – please fill in a registration form.
We also have vacancies in our teams for publicity, website, marketing events, socials, maintenance, cleaning, catering, merchandising, training, bookings, finance. If you’d like to lend a hand for 2-3 hours most weeks on shore in one of our Land Crew roles – we’d welcome your skills. Please say what you can do on your registration form.
