The John Bunyan Boat Team is proud to announce that they are taking part in hosting the Conscia Jazz Festival which takes place on the weekend of Saturday 2nd September and Sunday 3rd September. On both days they will be running Lunchtime Jazz Cruises departing from Sovereigns Quay (next to the Star Rowing Club) in Bedford Town Centre for a two hour river cruise.
The Saturday Cruise will feature the James Brady Trio.
Creative trumpeter and composer James Brady began his musical life in Bedfordshire at Bedford Modern School, before going on to study music and jazz at Cambridge and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Now resident in London, James has performed across the world including at the Montreux Jazz Festival, London Jazz Festival, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Casa di Jazz (Rome) and Budapest Jazz Club, working with artists including Liane Carroll, Laurence Cottle, Laura Mvula, Will Young and Shlomo. His Latin-influenced conteporary quartet, Vesperados, is planning to release a debut recording in late 2017, and he is also working on original jazz music for a play about the life and works of Raymond Chandler.
James is joined by local bass hero Edwin Ireland and NYJO guitarist Nick Fitch, all of whom met whilst studying at the Guildhall Jazz Department. They will be playing a set of jazz standards, particularly focusing on the works of Duke Ellington, led by James' melodic, lyrical trumpet style.
The Sunday Cruise will feature the Ellie Bignall Trio
Ellie is a London-based Jazz singer who performs a variety of styles of music. She has been trained in and influenced by many genres including jazz, soul, gospel, and classical. Her style of singing is very reminiscent of the forties and fifties; often likened to singers such as Anita O’Day, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, Ellie combines a love of the Great American Songbook with an interest in contemporary jazz. Once described as a ‘singing sensation’, she has performed at various venues in and around London, including Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, the Houses of Parliament, the Vortex Jazz Club (as part of the Trinity Conservatoire Jazz Choir), the Spice of Life, the 100 Club and Oliver’s Jazz Bar. Ellie was once invited onstage to sing at the American Legion Speakeasy in Harlem with the Jason Marshall Organ Trio, and has studied with various vocal tutors including Anita Wardell, Pete Churchill Ian Shaw, Brigitte Beraha, Lee Gibson, Norma Winstone, and Georgina Jackson
